DTH probability by TRAI
TRAI is planning to introduce DTH inter comparability and probability for Indian DTH viewers. On the lines of mobile portability, to stimulate the sector's growth, chairman J S Sarma said. "Entry price in DTH is coming down on its own. Growth will now be a function of quality and pricing. Portability in DTH may reduce entry barriers for users," Sarma said in an interview
Subscribers in the country currently have to pay for installation each time they switch their DTH service provider. DTH service providers could be accused on two counts. One is that they have 'blocked' their set top boxes, preventing the set top box supplied by one service provider from being used to access the services of the other.
Currently, service providers are using two technology platforms -- MPEG2 and MPEG4 -- for offering their services, allowing them to extend the argument that equipment of one will thus not be compatible with the service of the other. "All these are issues that will be looked into. DTH will do well if service providers can offer more than cable operators," Sarma said.

India First DTH service to launch HD TV from SUNDIRECT
The TV sets that support this format are HD LCD MPEG4 which will cost you around 60k bugs.
The ordinary TV sets won't have much difference with HD format because they don't support the format. In current world only few channels that are in HD format.
my views are :
1. wait for the TV set's prices comes to 10k bugs
2. wait for much more channels in HD format
3. wait the cost of the equipments reduce.
This will take almost 1 year.
Here are some FAQ's for sundirect.
1. What is the difference between Normal and HD Broadcast?
High-Definition is the top of the line, all digital format for broadcasting and viewing TV programming. With HD broadcast the images will be 2 to 5 times sharper than the images from normal broadcast. The reason being the digital signals send in 0’s and 1’s for HD Broadcasting will be received at the customer point as it is which is not the case for normal television broadcasting. The result of the same is, superior television viewing experience which is delivered in a crystal clear, wide screen format with CD quality sound. It will be like as if you are experiencing your favorite television program in a movie theatre. With High Definition Broadcasting the television images will be Rich and vibrant images giving a theatre like viewing experience Wide angle aspect ratio – meaning watching images will be a more intense experience just like watching our home television programs in a movie theatre The images will be much more sharper in High Definition broadcasting than the normal version HDTV has digital sound facility which is equivalent to the sound quality produced by the DVD’s. All HDTV broadcasting uses Dolby sound system which is superior in quality and creates a different level of listening experience.
2. What are the major advantages of HD Transmission?
Picture Resolution - HD broadcast will result in a better quality image than normal broadcast system because of higher resolution (a measure of picture sharpness). This essentially means that you can watch the image as real as it gets. Since the digital signals maintain its original quality through out the broadcasting there won’t be problems of signal deterioration, interference etc which we normally see in an analogue or old broadcasting systems
Aspect Ratio Quality – This essentially means that the home viewer will be introduced to a wide screen viewing experience like in a movie theatre with HD broadcast systems compared to the older analogue systems. With this attribute you will see more of what you are watching making television viewing more intensive experience. It is due to this factor that HD viewing is normally known as wide screen viewing experience. Digital Sound - With HD Broadcast system we get to experience the digital audio sound which is significantly better than the standards broadcasting systems analogue sound. The HD Broadcast system supports Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound which will create theatre quality surround sound effect in your living room effectively changing your living room television viewing into a movie theatre experience
3. What is the standard Television equipment I need to experience Sun Direct HD service?
HD LCD TV is required to view and experience the Sun Direct HD service. All leading home appliance companies like Samsung, LG, Sony, Videocon etc manufacture the same.
4. What is the expense for purchasing Sun Direct HD Set Top Box for experiencing the High definition service?
Price Rs.9,999 + taxes (Any basic pack must be purchased for 5 or 10 or 12 months for experiencing the service. Installation charge Rs. 1250 + HD content usage charge extra.)
5. Tell me more about the content currently available on Sun Direct HD service?
Currently 2 South Indian Service (Tamil / Telugu) – 24 hrs entertainment are available with Sun Direct HD service. We are tying up with National Geographic and Discovery channel soon.
6. What is the monthly service access charge for the HD content available with Sun Direct HD service?
Rs.100 Per channel per month for Tamil and Telugu.
7. Is there any advance booking for Sun Direct HD service?

how to get indian tv channels in UAE, kuala lumpur, dubai, sharjah, abu dhabi, kuwayt.
the india DTH coverage is limited to india territory only. but the satellites are places in such high that it can not restrict signal to scater. so by this we can catch the signal from the satellite by following ways.
first we have get the dish and setupbok STB (MPEG2) from any local dealer with Ku LNB for free to air channels such as from dd direct plus. with is the only one DTh service will provide free to air channels in india. you get a dream box any were in world it is a open source stb.
in selection of the dish we have to take alot of care because it is the most important to catch the signals. normally in india 30cm is more than sufficient but other than india we need the larg dish it depends on the distance from india.
for example to dubai it needs 120cm of dish to get full signal from india satellite. so please choose the proper dish size to get full signal. most important is clear sky view there should not be any object like building are any others objects between the dish and sky. direct shall be facing india and the satellite is INSAT 4B at 93.5c east. it is easy by adjusting it by viewing signal in STB.
for pay channels services like dishtv, sundirect, tatasky, airteldirect, Bigtv. we need to have there STB's. in genaral all there STB's are carring by the passenger from india to respective country's but it is illlegal to carry the india STB's but there is one option is by getting DREAM BOX STB.
if carry any pay service STB there will a smart card with it. by this the encrypt signal are decrypted and you can view the channels. for you have pay the monthly or yearly fee to the service providers.
now a days payments are made easy so you pay through internet.
any technical problem shall be done only in india.
but the illiagal way of geting pay channels for free is through Dream box STB. it is open source STB run in linux with internet connection you can crack the encrypted signal and watch tv for free.
Dear all,
I installed 4 types of DTH setupbox in abu dhabi and dubai.
Sundirect in abu dhabi is working fine with 180cm dish and clear sky view. still date there is no problem.
The Dish tv in dubai is working fine but the signal varies few mins but there is issue in picture quality.
TataSKy installation is high in UAE/Dubai/Sharjah because of quality.
The dth is one way communication system so there no one find from ware your accessing the satellite.
About dream box you can only access tatasky, DD direct plus and dish tv because it is MPEG2 technology.
i found it many shops in dubai/abu dhabi/sharjah. but you have to buy smart card to view pay channels.
please write comments for more details.
how to take two connections from a single DTH like SUNdirect, bigtv, dishtv, dd direct, tatasky, airtel digital
1. in a single Dth connection for multiple tv's. in some setupbox (STB) there is a line out facility which will help to have another connection to tv. but you will receive same channel in both of the tv's because the STB is the controler for both tv's.
2. you have to buy second STB and have a spitter ( this is device connect at LNB to share the signal for both STB's) hardware to connect two STB's. there is no need of any dish.
3. the last one is currently runing method of haveing two STB's and TWO LNB's with same dish.

we can get FM channels through DD plus antena?
1. to get free to air FM channels in india and around india. we have to buy a dish and MPEG4 setupbox. the MPEG2 won't support the FM channels because there are in MPEG4 format.
2. currently FM channels are in INSAT4B satellite at 93.5East.
3. sundirect setupbox can be used for the free to air channels and free FM radio.
4. the list of FM raio channels in satellite are Suryan FM, S FM Hyderabad, S FM Bangalore ect.

SUNDirect setupbox can be used for free to air (FTA) channels
we can view the DD Direct Plus channels in sundirect setupbox for free of cost.
1. the dish direction is same as the both sundirect and dd direct plus are in same satellite INSAT4B at 93.5 East. so there is no change in dish direction.
2. sundirect is using the IRDETO technology. this is only to encrypt the pay channels. so the smart card will not block the FTA channels.
3. the setupbox is MPEG4 and MPEG2 compartablility so both will work on same setup box.
enjoy viewing free channels in sundirect connection.

WiMAX services in india can offer data and voice calls
India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has proposed that winners in the upcoming licence auctions for broadband wireless access (BWA) - read mobile WiMAX - will be able to offer voice as well as data services.
But the dispensation comes at a price. Instead of calculating the BWA licence reserve price at 25 per cent of the 3G licence reserve price on a per MHz basis, the DoT has proposed, following recommendations made by the Telecom Commission, that BWA licence winners pay at least 50 per cent of the base 3G licence cost.
While the addition of voice is no doubt a boost to WiMAX prospects, supporters of the technology will no doubt baulk at the premium price tag. The WiMAX Forum had already stated before the latest DoT announcement that it was working with the Indian government to try and reduce the BWA reserve prices that were calculated at 25 per cent of the 3G price.
By contrast, the cellular camp believes the DoT hasn't gone far enough in its latest proposal. "The WiMAX lobby had argued that reserve price should be lower to enable them to make broadband services affordable. If they are allowed to offer voice services also they should be treated at par with existing mobile operators bidding for 3G spectrum," a GSM industry representative is quoted in local press report.
Earlier this month DoT announced that 40MHz in the 2.3GHz band and 40MHz in the 2.5GHz band would be made available for BWA. In the 2.5GHz band, 20MHz has already been set aside for state operators BSNL and MTNL. The remaining 60MHz is to be auctioned to three more operators who are allowed 20MHz each.
Prospective 3G operators will be allowed to bid for one pair of 5MHz channels only: 5MHz in the 1920-1980MHz frequency band and 5MHz at 2110-2170MHz.

Bharti Airtel plans to rollout IPTV, DTH services at same time
Bharti Airtel is looking at simultaneous rollout of Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) and direct-to-home (DTH) services following the Cabinet approval on downlinking norms for IPTV Expected to be launched with in two months time. the two services will have differential priced, with DTH targeted at the mass market and IPTV for broadband (high-speed internet) users.
“We are now putting our launch (for IPTV) together. Right now, we are examining different options internally. Both the launches could be simultaneous or we could have them in phases. What is certain is that IPTV will be first launched in Delhi while DTH will be rolled out on a much larger scale,” Bharti Airtel president for Telemedia services Atul Bindal told ET.
Telemedia is Airtel’s business division that provides broadband and fixedline services to over 2.5 million customers in 95 cities. “Over the next few weeks, we will firm up our plans. IPTV will be an integral part of Airtel’s media business because DTH allows us to go wide and IPTV allows us to go deep in 6-8 top cities,” he said. On the pricing, Mr Bindal said: “IPTV sits on top of broadband. It gives me an opportunity to cross-sell and deepen my relationship with existing customers using local loop or broadband or both. My pricing for IPTV will be triple play (voice, data and video). For DTH, we’ll explore single play, double play as well as triple play and introduce it in around 5,000 towns and villages.”
DTH services are currently being offered by TataSky, Dish TV, Sun Direct and Reliance Communications’ Big TV. Asked about profitability, as none of the DTH players is currently making money, Mr Bindal said: “We don’t believe new businesses are a drag, if chosen correctly.
We are uniquely positioned to leverage the existing technological knowhow and are exploring ways and means for cross-leveraging our relationship with Airtel customers.”
Globally, IPTV is considered a niche segment as broadband access is not uniform. Industry estimates suggest that India will have around a million IPTV users by 2011 and for DTH, the number would be over 23 million.

Bharati Airtel launched DTH services in Gurgaon, haryana.
Bharati Airtel launched DTH services in Gurgaon for employees.
The DTH service — to be branded Airtel, which is also the mobile phone service brand — will be started by Bharti Telemedia Services Ltd, a group company, and run by Bharti Airtel Ltd, the mobile phone firm. All set: Atul Bindal, president of Bharti Airtel, says the rates would be similar to those of existing operators and higher than cable TV rates
“We are in a high state of preparedness to launch our DTH services. A trial launch has been done among the employees and the feedback is very good. We are putting in the last minute changes to reach the last town, and to have a footprint like the (Airtel) prepaid recharge value chain,” said Atul Bindal, president of Bharti Airtel. “We want to leverage on every bit of that (Airtel brand).”
Bharti Airtel has 923,472 outlets across India as in end-June through which it sells prepaid, postpaid, and value-added service offerings. On pricing, Bindal said the rates would be similar to those of existing DTH operators and higher than cable TV rates. DTH firms such as Tata Sky Ltd, an 80:20 joint venture between the Tata Group and Star Group; Dish TV Ltd, an Essel Group company; and Sun Direct TV Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between Chennai-headquartered Sun TV Network Ltd and Malaysia’s South Asia Entertainment Holdings Ltd, charge between Rs30 and Rs300 (exclusive of taxes) a month for the service.
“We entered the consumers’ home with voice, then it was data and broadband, now we want to give them a ‘one knock at the door experience’ with one bill and one service provider,” he said. “Airtel will be the only telco that can do and make a difference as we have the underlying technology in terms of billing and convergence. This will not be possible for a standalone DTH player.”
“Eventually the game plan for Bharti is to get into all the potential ‘telecom real estate’ and be a full scale telecom service provider. And DTH service launch by the company is one step in that direction. Arpus (average revenue per user) in DTH is much higher than the telecom,” said Alok Shende, principal consultant, Acceindia Consulting. “Bharti is readying to offer multiple services (to the consumers) after the DTH launch. It just allows a lot of creative bundling strategy to happen.”
The Airtel DTH service will use the so-called MPEG4 format for the first time in India with advanced security encryption systems, Bindal added

Reliance BIG TV commercial operations on August 15 and also a IPL partner
Direct-to-Home (DTH) war is about to hot up with Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani (ADA) Group (BIGTV), Bharti Airtel (airtel Digital DTH) and Videocon Group(D2H) all set to join the indian DTH market.
Reliance Communications, India's second largest mobile services provider, said it would launch nationwide commercial operations of its DTH service from August 15, under the name BIG Digital TV DTH (BIG TV).
A Reliance official said the company would market its DTH service aggressively with the aim of becoming the No.1 DTH player within the first year of operation.
The tariff rates would be competitive and subscribers would have greater freedom of choosing from a wider variety of channels than what is presently being offered by current players, the official said.
The company is believed to have completed its trial runs in over 2000 towns and cities among customers of other Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani (ADA) Group companies and has reportedly received overwhelming response.
"The feedback was extremely positive. We will launch the DTH service with the aim of becoming No.1 in the market. We have already ordered 5 million Set Top Boxes from vendors in Korea and Taiwan," the official said, adding that the Set Top Boxes would come with a digital video recording facility.
Agrees Salil Kapoor, COO, Dish TV India Ltd. "The (MPEG-4) technology might be advantageous from the operator's angle. Compressed data files transmitted through satellite using MPEG-4, a high definition platform, will have better quality."
Though the service providers would have to bear the same cost of bandwidth irrespective of the technology used and MPEG-4 technology would make picture quality better, yet, "the price of the set-top boxes will be higher" for the customers," Kapoor said.
ALL of you Ready to get to see the BIG Tv soon.

Indian natural calamity alerts on DTH TV screen
"In the next six months, (state-run) Doordarshan will relay warning signals from Insat transponders in Ku-band on impending disasters through a DTH receiver linked to the national disaster management support system in New Delhi," Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman G. Madhavan Nair told IANS.
"The advance alert will enable state agencies and the public to prepare for any natural calamity and minimise damage to life and property," he added. "As against expensive and heavy equipment consisting of an antenna, power supply system and a TV booster, we have developed a lighter DTH receiver that can be hooked to a TV set for receiving advance warning through voice or signals even while watching any channel," Nair pointed out.
ISRO has commissioned state-run Bharat Electronics Ltd to manufacture about 1,000 DTH receiver sets for supplying to state agencies and other stakeholders.
"The receivers, costing less than Rs.10,000 per set, can be installed by state governments in disaster-prone or coastal areas for alerting people in advance about heavy rains, cyclones, high-speed winds, tsunami and other natural disasters.
"The novel project will be launched on a pilot basis by this year-end using Doordarshan's DTH platform," Nair said after delivering the valedictory address at an international seminar on disaster management.
Private DTH operators such as Tata Sky, Dish TV, Sun TV and others will subsequently be roped in to offer the service on their platform as they are also using ISRO's Ku-band transponders to telecast their bouquet of channels.
